In a major development highlighted in News Today USA in Punjabi updates, US President Donald Trump has said that India must stop “dumping” rice—selling it at extremely low prices—in the American market. He added that he will quickly address this issue through tariffs.

Trump met representatives from the agriculture sector at the White House along with key cabinet members, including the Treasury Secretary and the Agriculture Secretary. During the meeting, he also announced 12 billion dollars in federal assistance for farmers.

Merrill Kennedy, who runs the Kennedy Rice Mill in Louisiana, informed Trump that rice producers in South America are struggling because some countries are dumping large quantities of rice in the US. When Trump asked which nations were responsible, Kennedy mentioned India, Thailand, and even China, which has been dumping rice in Puerto Rico. She said this issue has existed for years but has now grown significantly.

As per the Indian Rice Exporters Federation, India is the world’s largest rice producer (150 million tonnes) with a 28% share of the global rice market. India also leads in global rice exports, holding a 30.3% share in 2024–2025.

According to the India Brand Equity Foundation, India exported around 2.34 lakh tonnes of rice to the US in FY 2024—less than 5% of its total global basmati rice exports (52.4 lakh tonnes).
This trade update once again becomes part of major News Today USA in Punjabi coverage due to its impact on both economies.
