According to the News UK in Punjabi, residents of the peaceful Park Hall area of Walsall are in shock after a racially motivated sexual assault on a young woman of Indian origin last week. The 20-year-old victim was attacked, and a 32-year-old man has been arrested on charges of rape. He is currently in police custody, and West Midlands Police are questioning him regarding the case.
The UK Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, described the incident as a heinous crime in a post shared on social media. She said, “The racial rape incident in Walsall is horrifying. My thoughts are with the victim and her family. I understand the fear and anxiety felt by the local Sikh community. I have received assurance from police and local leaders that every possible effort will be made to support those affected by this crime. I urge anyone with information to come forward and contact West Midlands Police as soon as possible.”
Local Walsall councillors also met with the police to review the progress of the investigation. Councillor Ram K. Mahimi said, “I am shocked and deeply saddened. What happened to this young woman is unacceptable. The local community is worried, as this is the second racial attack in the West Midlands region.”
Councillor Ram K. Mahimi, of Indian origin, is also the chief trustee of the local Shri Guru Ravidass Temple in Darlaston.
British Sikh Members of Parliament from the Labour Party, Preet Kaur Gill and Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi, strongly condemned the incident. Preet Kaur Gill stated, “It is deeply concerning to see repeated acts of violence against women in our region.”
