According to the latest Canada Immigration News, people visiting Canada on a tourist visa will no longer be eligible to obtain a driverโs license in Ontario. Additionally, to qualify for licenses to drive trucks, buses, or other commercial vehicles (Class A), individuals must first hold a car license and maintain a clean driving record for several years.
Transport Minister Prabhmeet Singh Sarkaria announced that, in response to long-standing public demand, a bill addressing this issue has been introduced in the Legislative Assembly and will be implemented immediately once passed.
Following this change, only Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and holders of valid work permits will be eligible for any type of driving license. Ontarioโs ruling party has a strong majority in the Legislative Assembly, making the billโs passage likely. Similar regulations have been in effect in other Canadian provinces for many years.
This change, reported in Canada Immigration News, may pose challenges for trucking companies, but it is expected to improve road safety by reducing accidents caused by inexperienced drivers and preventing companies from overworking new drivers.
