New York/New Delhi (Apna Punjab Media): According to the Latest News of Punjab in Punjabi, India has once again demonstrated its global influence by being elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the 2026–2028 term, marking its seventh term. The UNHRC announced that India’s three-year term will begin on January 1, 2026.
India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, P. Harish, thanked all member states and stated that this election reflects India’s steadfast commitment to human rights and fundamental freedoms.
The Human Rights Council consists of 47 member countries, elected by the United Nations General Assembly for three-year terms according to geographic distribution rules. Since the council’s establishment in 2006, India has been a member for most terms, except in 2011, 2018, and 2025. In the first 2006 election, India received 173 out of 190 votes, achieving the highest support.
Since then, India has been part of the council six times (2006–07, 2008–10, 2012–14, 2015–17, 2019–21, 2022–24). Other countries elected alongside India for this term include Angola, Chile, Ecuador, Egypt, Estonia, Iraq, Italy, Mauritius, Pakistan, Slovenia, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and Vietnam.
