Apna Punjab Media โ€“ In the latest Chandigarh Punjab News, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Rajinder Gupta was today elected unopposed as a Rajya Sabha member. Today was the last day to withdraw nominations, and after Madhu Gupta withdrew her papers, Rajinder Gupta was declared elected without any contest.

For the Rajya Sabha election, returning officer Ram Loke Khatana, in the presence of Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan, issued the certificate declaring Rajinder Gupta as a Rajya Sabha member.

Rajinder Guptaโ€™s wife, Madhu Gupta, was also present on the occasion. With his election, the number of AAP members from Punjab in the upper house has now increased to seven. The seat had become vacant after Sanjeev Arora resigned from Rajya Sabha on July 1, and a by-election was scheduled for October 24. However, as there were no opposing candidates, Rajinder Gupta was declared elected today.

For the by-election, four other candidates including Navneet Chaturvedi had filed nominations. However, three nominations were rejected, and one candidate, Madhu Gupta, withdrew her papers today. During this Rajya Sabha election, there was considerable controversy over the nomination of independent candidate Navneet Chaturvedi, as his nomination papers allegedly included a fake support letter from 10 AAP MLAs. Following complaints from MLAs, cases were registered against Chaturvedi in four districts, and he was recently arrested by Ropar police.
