According to Canada Today News in Punjabi, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Karney said that Canada does not yet see a trade deal with the US taking shape before the USMCA (CUSMA) review. He stated that if US President Donald Trump wants to ease tariffs affecting certain industries, discussions can take place.
Karney added that he is ready to hold meetings by the end of this week. He acknowledged that Canada is prepared for talks but noted that relief for the steel, aluminum, and lumber sectors remains uncertain.
Karney said that currently, trade discussions are on hold. However, the federal government expects talks to resume during the USMCA review process, which is scheduled to begin in 2026.
He recalled that the Ontario government’s anti-tariff campaign in the US had previously led Trump to halt trade discussions.
On Thursday, while speaking to reporters at Parliament Hill, Karney was joined by Ontario Premier Doug Ford. Together, the leaders signed a new federal-provincial cooperation agreement, a development highlighted by Canada Today News in Punjabi.
