WASHINGTON: US Congressman Brad Sherman has issued a statement asking the interim government of Bangladesh to protect the Hindu minority and address the ongoing protests over recent attacks and harassment by Hindus and minority communities. Sherman called for an investigation by the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk into the killings and other abuses during the unrest that followed the fall of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The Congressman urged the current administration to take action against violence targeting the Hindu community and demonstrate leadership in ensuring their safety.
The interim government of Bangladesh has an absolute responsibility to protect its Hindu minority and to meaningfully address the protests by thousands of minority Hindus over the recent wave of attacks and persecution. United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, following the killings and other rights violations during the violent unrest of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the current administration must demonstrate leadership to end acts of violence against the Hindu community.
