California: Apna Punjab Media: Representative Josh Harder of California recognized February 4 as ‘Saka Nakodar Day’ in the House of Representatives in a speech to Congress. This memorial is dedicated to the memory of four Sikh students who were killed during the Saka Nakodar massacre in Punjab, India in 1986. On 4 February 1986, Indian security forces opened fire on unarmed Sikh students – Ravinder Singh, Baldhir Singh, Jhilman Singh and Harminder Singh – who were peacefully protesting against the desecration of the “Sri Guru Granth Sahib”. This incident, known as “Saka Nakodar 1986” (Nakodar massacre of 1986), has been condemned as a gross violation of human rights and freedom of assembly. Representative Herder, who presented the medal to Dr. Harjinder Singh, brother of Martyr Bhai Ravinder Singh, stressed the importance of ‘Saka Nakodar Day’ in remembering Saka Nakodar. In Punjabi, “Saka” means massacre and “Nakodar” means place of torture, he said. The day not only remembers the sacrifice of the students but also widely condemns hate crimes and violations against the Sikh community. Highlighting the significance of the day, Harder said, “Celebrating Saka Nakodar Day allows us to uphold the democratic and human rights of all people. It is a reminder of our continued fight for truth, justice and accountability for the victims and their families more than 38 years later.” This recognition reflects the ongoing struggle for justice and the need to remember such historic events To make sure they are not forgotten.
