New Delhi: Apna Punjab Media: Jammu and Kashmir High Court Chief Justice N. Kotishwar Singh took oath as Supreme Court judge today and with this he has become the first judge from Manipur to reach the top court. Apart from him, Acting Chief Justice of Madras High Court R. Mahadevan also took oath as a judge of the Supreme Court. Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud administered the oath of office to the two judges during a ceremony at the Supreme Court complex here. With this, the number of judges including CJI in the Supreme Court has increased to 34, which is the full number. 34 judges will serve in the apex court till the retirement of Justice Hima Kohli on September 1, 2024, and thereafter when CJI Chandrachud retires on November 10 the same year.
The Center had on July 16 approved the recommendation made by the five-member Supreme Court collegium. On July 11, the Collegium directed the Center to appoint two judges, Justice Kotishwar Singh and Justice R. recommended. Mahadevan was recommended for elevation as a Supreme Court judge.
