New Delhi: The ruling BJP is all set to push its’ one nation, one election “agenda and the government is likely to bring a bill in this regard in the ongoing winter session of Parliament.
Official sources said here today that as per the Ram Nath Kovind Committee report on simultaneous elections, six Bills would be required to bring about 18 amendments in the Constitution and various laws. The report was approved by the Cabinet on September 18. Once the Bill is introduced, it will be referred to a Joint Committee of Parliament for consultation with other stakeholders including political parties, state governments and civil society organisations. Along with the Uniform Civil Code, ‘One Nation, One Election’ is a flagship project of the BJP, which the party had promised in its manifesto for the Lok Sabha polls. Under this, elections to the Lok Sabha, state assemblies, municipal corporations and panchayats will be held simultaneously. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh will hold talks with various political parties on the issue.
