Sydney: Apna Punjab Media: Good news for Indians working in Australia, especially Punjabi immigrants. Recently the Australian government announced a new visa subclass that allows migrant workers fighting for their rights in the workplace to stay longer to claim their rights. Exploited workers now have up to a year to present their claims to their employers. This is good news for temporary visa holders working in the country, who are often mistreated by their employers. The new visa, known as the Workplace Justice Visa (subclass 408), came into force on 24 July. Already, some migrant workers have approached the Human Rights Law Centre, allegedly facing injustice at the workplace. The Workplace Justice Visa gives holders full right to work for six to 12 months. Applicants may choose to reapply if necessary. There is also a provision that protects workers who have accused their employers of exploitation from having their visas cancelled. This is a welcome improvement in terms of providing security to migrant workers. There have been countless cases of migrant workers being paid low wages.
