According to News India Today, the central government withdrew its order to pre-install the cybersecurity app Sanchar Saathi on all new smartphones after strong opposition. Political parties expressed concerns that the app could spy on users and violate privacy. Reports say companies like Apple and Samsung also opposed the governmentโ€™s directive.

The government had claimed the app would help locate stolen phones and prevent misuse. Now, users can download the Sanchar Saathi app directly from app stores.

The Ministry of Communications confirmed that mobile companies no longer need to pre-install the app. The ministry explained that the original order aimed to speed up app adoption and make it accessible to less tech-savvy citizens. It added that six lakh users registered to download the app in a single day.

The government defended the app, stating it is safe and users voluntarily approve it. Globally, except for Russia, few countries require pre-installation of cybersecurity apps on all smartphones. In response to a Lok Sabha question from Congress leader Deepender Singh Hooda, Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia clarified that the Sanchar Saathi app does not spy on users or compromise privacy.
