In the Latest USA News in Punjabi, the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has imposed sanctions on Colombian President Gustavo Petro, his family, and a senior member of his government. The U.S. accuses them of being involved in the global drug trafficking network.
This move has significantly increased tensions between the United States and one of its closest South American allies, now led by a leftist government.
The U.S. Treasury Department announced that sanctions were placed on President Gustavo Petro, his wife Verónica del Socorro Alcocer García, his son Nicolás Fernando Petro Burgos, and Colombian Interior Minister Armando Alberto Benedetti.
In a statement, Treasury Secretary Scott Besant said that President Petro had allowed drug cartels to flourish and refused to take action against them.
In the Latest USA News in Punjabi, President Trump is taking firm steps to protect the nation and has made it clear that the United States will not tolerate drug trafficking within its borders,” Besant added.
The decision has further intensified the ongoing conflict between the Republican U.S. President and Colombia’s leftist leadership, particularly regarding recent U.S. military strikes on boats allegedly smuggling narcotics off the South American coast.
