Ottawa: Apna Punjab Media: The number of international students in Canada is drastically decreasing due to the student border. Because of this, Canada’s colleges and universities are facing huge budget cuts. Langara College President Paula Burns said international applications were down 79 per cent compared to last year. According to the report of ‘Vancouver Sun’, members of the college’s faculty association have described this situation as critical. This has been described as a ‘sudden and drastic decline’ in student enrolment, which will affect everyone. A sharp decline in international students will impact wages, benefits and jobs.
Langara College has the highest international student ratio in British Columbia. 37 percent of the students in Langara College study on study visa. The college enrolled about 7,500 international students last year, according to federal government data. Most of them were from India. This figure is more than Simon Fraser University, a large educational institution in Canada.
Langara is not the only college facing shortage of students. Simon Fraser University, Victoria University and Vancouver Island University are also planning budget cuts due to declining numbers of international students. The enthusiasm of foreign students towards these institutions is not without reason. Foreign students typically pay four times higher tuition fees than domestic students. Meanwhile, the University of British Columbia said its admissions budget is running according to projections.
