Indonesia has signed a regulatory framework agreement related to the quality assurance of seafood products exported to the US, the agreement was announced on July 12 by Indonesia’s Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), for which the US And quality and safety assurance systems will be introduced. Marine and Fisheries Products (SJMKHP) will be brought in line with global import standards. The move follows the 2021 US Congressional mandate ordering the US. Reform of regulations on imported shrimp by the Food and Drug Administration. The mandate includes establishing regional partnership agreements with India, Indonesia and Ecuador – the top US shrimp exporters by volume. According to the Jakarta Globe, Ecuador became the first of the three countries to sign the regulatory partnership arrangement in September 2023 and India also recently signed it.
“We are committed to emphasizing to local and global consumers that Indonesian fish products are safe and of high quality,” Ishartini, director general of Indonesia’s Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Quality Assurance Agency, said in a press release. Failure to comply with this plan or agreed cooperation will result in Indonesian shrimp facing stricter border measures for food safety upon entering the United States. This, of course, can be harmful for us.
