Sacramento, CaliforniaIndian-American Dr Darshana R Patel, the Democratic leader who won California’s 76th Assembly district, has been sworn in as a member of the state assembly. In her brief address on the occasion, she thanked the residents of the constituency and said she would try her best to live up to their expectations. “The residents of the constituency have given me the privilege of representing the 76th district in the state assembly and I am very much looking forward to working for them,” he said. I take this responsibility very seriously. I will work with dedication towards the people who have reposed their faith in me. Patel defeated Republican nominee Christie Bruce Lane with 53% of the vote.
He won by a margin of over 14,000 votes. Patel’s victory in the Republican-dominated 76th district is being seen as significant. While opposition candidate Bruce Lane had personally criticised Patel during the campaign, Patel raised people’s issues during his campaign and promised to work for those issues.
