Vinay Kwatra of Indian origin will take charge after the retirement of former US Ambassador Taranjit Sandhu.
New Delhi: Apna Punjab Media: Former Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra has been appointed India’s Ambassador to the US today. The Ministry of External Affairs said, “It is expected that he will take charge soon.” The post of India’s Ambassador to the US was vacant after the retirement of Taranjit Sandhu in January.
Indian-born Quatra served as the Foreign Secretary from 1 May 2022 to 14 July 2024. He joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1988. He served in the Permanent Mission of India in Geneva in the early years of his service. He has also been India’s Ambassador to France and Nepal.
Indian Foreign Service officer Vinay Kwatra has taken charge at a time when India’s neighboring countries are going through a crisis. After political turmoil, a new government has recently been formed in Pakistan and Sri Lanka is facing an economic crisis. Apart from this, there are challenges at the global level regarding the Ukraine war. Apart from this, many political developments are in front of New Delhi. Before becoming Foreign Secretary, Kwatra was India’s Ambassador to Nepal. Vinay Kwatra is considered an expert on India’s relations with its neighboring countries, America, China and Europe. Before his diplomatic posting to Nepal in 2020, he served as India’s Ambassador to France from August 2017 to February 2020. Vinay Kwatra, who has 32 years of experience, also held the post of Joint Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) for two years from October 2015 to August 2017.
