Reiterated commitment to immediate reform of UN Security Council
New York: Apna Punjab Media: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met the foreign ministers of the G-4 countries and reiterated the group’s commitment to immediate reform of the UN Security Council through a written document-based dialogue. Written document-based negotiation refers to the process of preparing the content of an agreement that all parties agree to accept and sign. G-4 countries include Brazil, Germany, India and Japan. Jaishankar, who came to America on an official visit, met Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa, German Foreign Minister Annalena Bierbach and Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira on the sidelines of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly. Jaishankar wrote on X, ‘Delighted to attend the traditional meeting of G-4 Foreign Ministers with my counterparts Annalena Bierbach, Yoko Kamikawa and Mauro Vieira in New York today. The G4 reiterated its commitment to immediate reform of the UN Security Council through a written document-based dialogue. India has for years been at the forefront of efforts to reform the Security Council, saying the 15-nation council, established in 1945, is not fit for purpose in the 21st century. He believes that it does not reflect contemporary geopolitical realities. The factionalized Security Council has failed to deal with peace and security challenges. Its members are divided on issues such as the Ukraine war and the Israel–Hamas war. Jaishankar also held talks with his Venezuelan counterpart Yvan Gil on energy and economic cooperation and other issues. The Foreign Minister also discussed bilateral relations between the two countries after meeting Bangladesh Foreign Affairs Advisor Tauheed Hussain.
