Northern Territory emergency services have revealed further details of a campfire explosion at the Finke Desert Race that left six Victorian men with severe burns.
The men, aged 18 to 23, were camping at C, about 30 kilometres south of Alice Springs, on Saturday night when the incident happened.
NT Police Acting Superintendent Michael Budge said the group arrived at the campsite that evening to discover a “self-extinguished” fire with a shock absorber lying next to it.
“These young people lit another fire and over the course of the night that fire has expanded with them throwing a bit more wood on there,” he said.
