Ottawa: Apna Punjab Media: Seeing the way the Canadian government is taking steps to reduce the number of foreigners in Canada, it is being said that people have started returning from Canada. Whereas according to experts there is not much truth in this. Experts say reverse migration is still a long way off. Experts say the sanctions imposed on India in the last eight months by Canada’s Justin Trudeau government will not solve the problem. This has definitely reduced the number of students but reverse migration will be possible only when the social and economic conditions of India are better than Canada. There is no possibility of this at present.
Recently, during a seminar organized by the Canadian Punjabi Cultural Society in Brampton, retired professor of Punjabi University, Kuldeep Singh, discussed this topic extensively. According to a report, he said that one can imagine returning only when there are more opportunities in one’s own country. So till now it is just an imagination, which is far away from reality. Referring to the World Development Report, Professor Kuldeep Singh said that the number of Indian students going around the world as international students has increased from 2 percent in 2000 to 41 percent in 2023. Canadian immigration statistics show that migration of Indian students to Canada has increased by 50 percent. In 2019 alone, 1,98,235 students came to Canada from India and 71 per cent of them were from Punjab alone.
