SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Hussain Ladoa Banga) – The state police chief will face criminal charges of obstruction of justice in connection with a raid on a small newspaper in the U.S. state of Kansas related to an investigation into a case last year. This announcement has been made by special government officials. Police Chief Gideon Cody will be charged in Marion County District Court, according to a 124-page report by Sedgwick County District Attorney Mark Bennett and Riley County Attorney Barry Wilkerson. This report states that according to the prosecution, it is possible that Cody may have committed a crime by intentionally and unintentionally obstructing justice. Prosecutors have not specified what charges will be filed, but have said the charges relate to a written exchange between local restaurant owner Kari Newell and Cody after the raid. It is worth noting here that Cody resigned from the Marion Police Department after the raid. The report details what happened before and during the August 2023 raid at the Marion County Records office, home of publisher Eric Meyer and a local councilwoman. At the time of the raid, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office said the raid was in connection with an investigation into identity theft and illegal computer-related activity based on the belief that the reporter had illegally obtained information about Knivell before publishing a newspaper report about him. A week after the highly publicized raid, Marion County Prosecutor Joel Anse withdrew the search warrant and ordered officers to return items seized during the raid.
