Tough decisions need to be taken to strengthen Congress: Kharge
At a meeting of Congress leaders to discuss the defeat in the Maharashtra and Haryana assembly elections, party president Mallikarjun Kharge said tough decisions have to be taken and accountability fixed to strengthen the party. The Congress president said changes will have to be made from the grassroots level to the All India Congress Committee to strengthen the party. Asking the leaders to remain united, he asked them not to make any objectionable comments against each other in public. Addressing the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting at the party office here, Kharge said the electronic voting machines (EVMs) have made the electoral process questionable and it is the constitutional responsibility of the Election Commission to ensure free and fair elections in the country. Referring to infighting and lack of unity in the Congress, he said statements against its own leaders cause a lot of damage to the party. “Unless we fight elections together and stop making statements against each other, how will we defeat our opponents. Kharge called for removing the shortcomings of the party by taking lessons from the election results and said a proper strategy has to be chalked out to counter the false propaganda of the opposition. He said a strategy has to be worked out to convert the wave in favour of the Congress into results. He asked the party workers and leaders to be prepared for the upcoming elections. Kharge said though the Congress had lost the elections, issues like unemployment, inflation and economic inequality still existed in the country. “Caste is also an important issue. The meeting was attended by Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, KC Venugopal, Jairam Ramesh and other leaders.
