Ottawa: Apna Punjab Media: Canada has made a big announcement regarding the admission of foreign students. Canadian Immigration Minister Mark Miller said that the implementation of their study permit limit will shift the government’s focus to managing resources and maintaining infrastructure to support international students. This move by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) aims to balance the number of incoming students and the capacity of Canadian institutions to ensure a good educational experience for all.
The Government of Canada expects to receive 606,000 study permit applications in 2024. Of these, only 364,000 applications will be approved, giving a nationwide approval rate of 60%. The number of study permits expiring in 2024 will determine the actual study permit cap, meaning the total number of new international students entering Canada will approximately equal the total number of students whose permits expire in the same year. In addition to the study visa limits ()IRCC has also changed the Postgraduate Work Permit eligibility criteria and ()GIC requirements for international students.
The Government of Canada has also changed the eligibility rules for postgraduate work permits. Due to this, students of many private colleges will soon become ineligible to get work permits. Under these changes, only spouses and children of students enrolled in master’s, doctoral or professional degree programs will be eligible for open work permits. Not only this, from January 1, 2024, the Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) requirement has been doubled for international students applying for a Canadian study permit.
