Sydney: Apna Punjab Media: The City of Sydney’s Lord Mayor Clover Moore has thrown her support behind an investigation into banning gas from all new builds in the city’s council area, despite significant opposition.
The City of Sydney council passed a motion that vows to fully investigate a ban on gas from all new homes and businesses, with eight out of 10 councillors in support on the vote on Monday night.
The city’s CEO Monica Barone will “investigate the opportunities and challenges” of amending city planning to mandate electric infrastructure, and no date has been set for any gas ban.
The motion follows the lead of Victoria, which last month made a decision to end new gas connections for homes and government buildings. While NSW Premier Chris Minns has declared the state won’t follow Victoria and issue a statewide ban on gas in new homes and buildings, several local councils in Sydney have decided to take a leaf out of Victoria’s book.
Waverley in Sydney’s east and Canterbury-Bankstown in the southwest have overruled him with their own rules requiring new buildings to have electric appliances only.
Opposition to the City of Sydney’s motion has called on the Premier to stop councils from imposing different rules, with Mr Minns holding the ability to override them by implementing planning rules.
