In Punjab, 71 castes belong to backward classes and their vote share is 35 to 40 percent but they do not get representation during elections.
The Government of India and the Election Commission should also make a column of OBC at the time of census

Backward classes (OBC) should get representation on the basis of population in municipal and municipal committee elections. These words were said by senior Congress leader Krishan Kumar Bawa, Coordinator AICC Backward Classes in-charge, Himachal Pradesh through a written statement.
Mr. Bawa said that 71 castes belong to backward classes in Punjab including Lubhana, Rai Sikh, Chhinba, Kashap, Rajput, Luhar, Bairagi, Saini, Christian, Soni, Gujjar, Soni Rajput, Mehra Rajput, Ramgariya, Tarkhan, Bagria chief. He said that they have 35 to 40% of the vote but are poorly represented. They demanded from the Government of India and the Election Commission that a column for backward classes should also be made during the census. He said that among the leaders of the country, former President and Chief Minister Giani Jail Singh, Rajesh Pilot, former Home Minister, former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, Sachin Pilot, former Union Minister, Haryana Chief Minister Naib Singh Saini, Punjab Finance Minister Dr. Only Krishna Lal Singh belonged to the backward classes. While today’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also associated with the backward classes, but no one pays attention to the interests of the backward classes. Bawa said that there should be pride in saying OBC or being called OBC.
