Chandigarh: Apna Punjab Media: All Indian visa application centers in Bangladesh will remain closed till further orders. India had recalled non-essential staff from its embassies and consulates. Sources said a message on the online portal Indian Visa Application Center (Bangladesh) said, “Due to the unstable situation all will remain closed till further notice. The next application date will be informed through SMS and the next date of receipt of passport will be will be requested.” This comes a day after India evacuated non-essential workers and their families from its high commissions and consulates in Bangladesh.
India has a high commission in Dhaka and consulates-general in Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna and Sylhet. Addressing Parliament, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said, “India is closely monitoring the situation of minorities in Bangladesh.” He said that the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh is in touch with the Indians there. After the protests started, many students returned to India.
Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin dissolved Parliament on Tuesday following the resignation of the former prime minister. Hasina, who is completing her fourth consecutive term after assuming power in 2009, is currently in India after leaving Dhaka. Naheed Islam, one of the key organizers of the anti-quota protests that ultimately led to Hasina’s resignation, is believed to have emerged as a key figure in the formation of an interim government in the country.
