Washington: Apna Punjab Media: After Donald Trump won the recent presidential election, the issue of high import duty on Harley-Davidson bikes in India has arisen again. Trump has long been critical of India’s heavy taxes on Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Which they consider unfair. During his previous term, Trump termed India a “tariff king” and even removed India’s Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) status, reducing India’s trade privileges with the US. In a 2023 interview, Trump reiterated his stance and questioned India’s heavy import duties that can reach 100-200% on foreign goods. Harley-Davidson has been struggling in various global markets, including the US, and with Trump’s re-election as US President, there are hopes the tariffs could provide some relief. Harley-Davidson has a very low market share in the Indian market. Higher taxes make Harley-Davidson bikes more expensive, affecting sales. These tariffs are in place because Harley sells most of its bikes either as completely built units (CBUs)Or imported into India as Completely Knocked Down Units (CKD), with CBUs facing import taxes of up to 50%. Despite the 2019 reduction in (CBU) tariffs, (CKD) fees have increased from 10% to 15%.
