Kathmandu: Apna Punjab Media: A plane of a private Nepalese airline crashed while taking off at Tribhuvan International Airport. The plane caught fire immediately after the accident. 18 people on board the plane died in the accident, including a foreign national. However, despite serious injuries, the pilot of the plane survived. Saury Airlines’ private flight N9AME was scheduled to take off for Pokhara for routine maintenance service when it crashed around 11:11 am. Nepal’s Civil Aviation Authority’s Search and Rescue Center said in a statement that the Bombardier CRJ-200 plane skidded off the runway during takeoff and immediately caught fire. Videos posted online showed the plane engulfed in flames and smoke billowing from it. After the accident, fire brigade vehicles and ambulances were sent to the spot. The deceased was identified as co-pilot S. Katuwal and Shaurya Airlines have 17 employees.
The dead also include a Nepali woman and a Yemeni citizen. Pilot Captain Manish Shakya (37) is undergoing treatment at Model Hospital in Kathmandu. Airport officials said 15 victims died on the spot, while three succumbed to their injuries during treatment at a local hospital. Soorya Airlines operates flights to five tourist centers in Nepal and according to the company website, the airline has a fleet of three Bombardier CRJ-200 jets. Nepal has been criticized for its poor air safety record in recent years, although there are many causes of air accidents, including climate change, mountainous airstrips, and human error. According to the Civil Aviation Organization of Nepal, 914 people have died in air accidents in the country since the first crash in August 1955. In January last year, a Yeti Airlines plane crashed in the popular tourist city of Pokhara, killing all 72 people on board, including five Indians.
